I was born the last day of 1946, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. I dropped out of Colby College in the 60s, worked as a secretary for ten years, went back to college, Brown University, graduated with honors with a BA in Philosophy, got an MA in Creative Writing, worked with John Hawkes and Verlin Cassill. Married Edward T. Kornhauser, professor of electrical engineering, Brown U., in 1978. Our son, Edward, was born in 1987. My husband died the following year and my son and I moved to California, where the rest of my family lives. St. Martin's Press published a collection of my short stories, Jenny and the Jaws of Life, in 1987, and reissued it in paperback, with an introduction by David Sedaris, in 2002. They also published my novels Winner of the National Book Award (2003), The Writing Class (2008), Amy Falls Down (2012), and Amy Among the Serial Killers (2022). Selected works and books have been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, German, and Czech editions.

What is that phobia called, the one you have when you’re reluctant to take quizzes fearing they’ll turn out to be pretty accurate?
